Life Drawing Workshops with Harvey Chan
Life / AFTER LIFE presents a compelling selection of figurative works by Harvey Chan that explores the enduring dialogue between observation and interpretation. Rooted in life drawing sessions with live models, these works extend beyond the immediacy of direct observation. While some remain complete as records of a single encounter, others take on a second life in the artist’s studio, where memory, intuition, and reflection continue to shape the creative process.
For Harvey Chan, some drawings reach their conclusion as the model changes pose, standing as direct responses to observation and the immediacy of the moment. For others, however, the life session marks only the beginning. Returning to these drawings and paintings in the studio, Chan develops them further, seeking to reveal the subtle emotions, inner character, and quiet presence of each model—qualities that often emerge only through sustained contemplation and imaginative engagement.
The exhibition reflects an artistic practice that values both careful observation and the transformative potential of memory. It is a testament to the enduring act of looking, remembering, and discovering what continues to resonate long after the model has departed.
Together, these works invite viewers to dwell in the space between what is seen and what is felt, suggesting that the deepest truths of figurative drawing are not always found in the initial act of observation, but often emerge through reflection, when the artist’s gaze turns inward.
Harvey Chan
その後、Art For Life Studioを設立。
Harvey Chan is a Vancouver-based artist, illustrator, and art educator, best known for his figurative drawing and painting, imaginative portraiture, and life-drawing workshops.
Harvey graduated from Ontario College of Art in Toronto and has worked professionally as an illustrator and art educator. He has taught at institutions including OCAD University, Sheridan College, Capilano University and Toronto School of Art, as well as developing his own teaching practice.
He later founded Art For Life Studio, first in Hong Kong and subsequently developing his studio and workshop practice in Vancouver. One distinctive aspect of Harvey’s work is that he doesn’t approach figurative art simply as an exercise in realistic representation. He is interested in how the figure can become a designed image—using anatomy, perspective, shape, rhythm, tonal structure, colour, calligraphy and abstraction to create something more expressive.
He is particularly interested in the tension between control and freedom: understanding structure deeply enough that an artist can eventually break away from rigid realism and create something personal.
He works across watercolour, water-soluble ink, gouache, coloured pencil on sanded paper, soft pastel, oil, acrylic and other mixed-media approaches.
